Zero Click Searches: Where Your Impressions Go
Zero click searches inflate impressions while clicks stay flat. Learn to tell a SERP feature from a bad title and measure your own zero click rate.

Zero click searches are the reason your Search Console graph can show impressions climbing, clicks flat, and CTR sliding, all in the same month, without a single thing changing on your site. Most people read that chart as a listing problem and rewrite their title tags. Often the listing is fine and the results page changed underneath it. This post shows you how to tell those two apart in your own data, and what is actually worth doing about each.
The short answer
A zero click search is a search that ends on the results page. The searcher got what they needed from a snippet, an answer panel, a map, or a knowledge card, and never visited a website.
Your impression still counted. Your click did not happen. Since CTR is clicks divided by impressions, a results page that answers more questions itself will push your CTR down while your ranking, your title and your page stay exactly as they were. That is arithmetic, not a penalty.
The practical consequence: stop reading CTR as a single number and start reading clicks and impressions as two separate series. The ratio hides the cause. The two raw counts reveal it.
What counts as a zero click search
The term describes searcher behavior, not a setting or a report you can open. It got its name from clickstream panel analyses, most visibly the zero click studies from SparkToro and later work from vendors like Semrush. Each defines the denominator differently: some count all searches, some only commercial intent, some fold in searches ending in a click to another property owned by the same search company.
That is why their headline percentages disagree so widely. Do not adopt somebody else's zero click percentage as your own number. Their panel is not your audience. Your Search Console data gives you a per query figure that actually is, and the worked example below builds it in about ten minutes.
Four terms get mixed up constantly, so here is the vocabulary this post uses:

The last row matters. No search engine publishes a "zero click rate" for your site. Anything you calculate is a proxy built from your own impressions and clicks.

Where the impression actually goes
When nobody clicks, the attention went somewhere. There are four common destinations, and they have very different implications for you.

The fourth row is the one people forget. A searcher who reformulates leaves you with a bare impression and no click, and in your report that looks identical to a searcher satisfied by an answer panel. Same row, same CTR, opposite meaning.
When your own page is the source of a snippet or a cited link, a zero click search is not purely a loss: you got the visibility, just not the session. Whether that trade is acceptable depends on whether your business model needs the visit.
The CTR arithmetic nobody checks
Here is the mechanism that makes CTR misleading during a zero click shift, using example figures for illustration.
Suppose a page holds steady at position 4 for a query across two months.

Nothing about the listing got worse. The position improved a little. Clicks went up, marginally. Yet CTR fell by roughly a third, which in most dashboards is a red alert.
The denominator grew. The results page started surfacing this site across a wider spread of related queries, or an expanded feature pushed more impressions into the same aggregate row. The CTR column punished a page for becoming more visible.
So the first diagnostic is never "what is my CTR." It is "which of my two numbers moved." Read the pair:

Only one of those four rows is a copywriting problem. The instinct to rewrite titles fires on all four.
Three causes of impressions without clicks
Once you know clicks did not follow impressions, there are three distinct causes and they need different responses. The Search Console fingerprints below are what separates them.

The third category is what information retrieval researchers call good abandonment: the searcher succeeded and left. It looks like failure in every dashboard you own. If someone searches your opening hours and reads them off the results page, you did your job, and chasing that CTR number is chasing a metric rather than a customer. Telling cause two from cause three has no automated shortcut: you have to open the live results page yourself, which is step 7 below.
What Search Console shows and the gap it will not fill
Two documented behaviors of the Performance report explain most confused readings.
Impressions have feature specific counting rules. Google's Search Console help documentation on the Performance report defines an impression as a link to your site appearing in a result set, and notes that for some result types the user must scroll or expand an element before an impression is counted. So impression volume is partly a function of which features appeared and how the searcher interacted with the page, not purely of how often you were eligible to rank.
Position is your topmost position. The same documentation defines the reported position as the highest position your site occupied for that query. If you hold two spots, the lower one is invisible in your average. Position can therefore look stable while the thing a searcher actually sees above you changes completely.
Then there is the gap. Google's Search Central documentation on AI features in Search states that performance data from AI experiences is included in the overall Search performance totals rather than broken out into a separate report. Clicks from links inside those experiences count as clicks, impressions count as impressions, and they land in the same aggregate rows as everything else.
The practical translation: you cannot filter your Performance report to "AI Overview impressions only," and you cannot subtract them out. Anyone selling you a precise split of your AI answer traffic from Search Console alone is modeling it, not reading it. Treat those figures as estimates and label them that way in your reporting. Bing Webmaster Tools reports the same three core metrics under its own counting rules, so compare trends within a tool, never absolute counts across two.
Worked example: measure your own zero click rate
This builds a per query zero click proxy from data you already have. All figures below are illustrative examples, not SparkCliks data or study results.
Step 1. Open the report. Google Search Console, then Performance, then Search results. Set the property to the exact domain or prefix you care about.
Step 2. Set the window. Date filter, then Compare, then "Last 28 days" against "Previous 28 days." Use 28 rather than 30 so both windows hold the same number of weekends. If your business is seasonal, compare against the same 28 days last year instead.
Step 3. Constrain the noise. Add a Position filter set to "Smaller than 11." Queries ranking below page one have low CTR for the boring reason that nobody scrolled that far, and they drown out the signal. Add Country and Device filters for your main market: results pages differ enough by both that mixing them averages away the effect.
Step 4. Export. Open the Queries tab, then Export, then to Google Sheets or CSV. You get Query, Clicks, Impressions, CTR and Position for both windows.
Step 5. Compute four columns.

Step 6. Sort and read. Sort by impression delta descending, then look only at rows where impression delta is strongly positive and click delta is near zero or negative. For example, a query going from 8,000 to 12,000 impressions while clicks move from 320 to 318, at a steady position 5, is a textbook feature driven or query expansion case. Rewriting that title will not recover those clicks, because those extra impressions were never going to click.
Step 7. Verify by hand. Take the top five such queries and actually search them, in an incognito window, on the right device and country. Note which features appear above you. This step is not optional. It is the only part of the process that distinguishes cause two from cause three, and it takes about five minutes.
A useful threshold from this exercise: if your zero click proxy for a query sits above roughly 0.90 while you hold a top five position, the results page is almost certainly answering the query itself. That is a rule of thumb for prioritization, not a published benchmark.
A before and after design for a noisy results page
If you do decide to change a title or description, a zero click environment will lie to you unless the test is designed for it. Shifting features move CTR on their own, so a naive before and after measures the results page, not your edit.

The control set is what makes this work, and it is the part most people skip. If your edited pages gained 8% CTR while untouched control pages gained 7% over the same 28 days, your edit did roughly nothing and the market moved. Without a control you would have reported a win.
Give any title change two full weeks of post reindex data before reading it, and confirm the snippet actually rendering is the one you wrote. Search engines rewrite titles in results, so the copy you are crediting may never have shipped.
What actually earns a click
On a results page that answers the query itself, your options are narrower and more specific than generic CTR advice suggests.
- Promise something an answer panel structurally cannot deliver. A calculator, a template, a downloadable file, current pricing, your own data. Summaries paraphrase text well. They do not hand over a tool.
- Target queries where a summary is a liability. Anything with a legal, financial, medical or high consequence edge, anything where the searcher wants to verify a source, anything turning on details a paraphrase drops.
- Move up the query chain, not down. If the head term is fully answered on the results page, the money is usually in the longer, messier follow up queries no panel bothers with.
- Match the promise to the page. A click landing on something other than what the snippet promised bounces straight back, and short round trips are the one behavior every serious analysis of click quality agrees is bad. We broke that down in long clicks vs short clicks.
A checklist to run against your own site
Run these in order. Stop as soon as one answers your question.
- Did impressions and clicks move in the same direction, or did they split?
- Is the average position for the affected queries inside the top ten?
- Did you or anyone else change the title, description, page content or URL in the window?
- What features actually appear on the live results page for the top five affected queries, checked by hand on the right device and country?
- Is your page the source of any snippet or citation on that page?
- Did comparable untouched pages move the same way in the same period?
- Does the query have a destination at all, or does the searcher just want a fact?
- Is the affected query worth the effort, measured in clicks you could realistically recover rather than in percentage points of CTR?
If questions 1, 2 and 6 point to a market wide shift, your title is not the problem, and editing it will cost you a stable baseline.
Where bought clicks fit and what they cannot fix
Being straight about this matters more than the sales pitch.
A bought click cannot fix a zero click results page. If searchers are getting their answer without visiting anyone, the shortage is demand for the click, and adding clicks from a service does not change what the results page shows or what the searcher needed. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something that does not do what they say.
